Skills to be developed with Addition Flashcards

  • Strengthen Numeracy Skills

With consistent use of addition math flashcards, children quickly memorise sums and begin answering mentally. This repetition lays a strong foundation for mental arithmetic and boosts confidence in early maths.

  • Lay the Foundation for Lifelong Maths Skills

From telling the time to handling money, mastering addition flashcards to 10 and 20 sets your child up for future maths success.

  • Boost Memory and Brain Development

These flashcards are designed to be flashed at high speed, activating the right brain and strengthening photographic memory - an essential Shichida method technique.

What Are Flashcards?

Flashcards are an essential tool of the Shichida Method.

Since the inception of the Shichida Method, “flashcard sessions” have been a core part of early childhood education. Designed especially for children aged 0 to 6 - when the brain is in its most critical period of development - flashcards are used to stimulate the right brain through high-speed, high-volume input. This helps unlock a child's natural potential, such as photographic memory, lightning-fast calculation ability, and powerful imagination - skills often likened to those of a computer or a world-class artist.

Not Just About Teaching Knowledge

Flashcard sessions are not primarily about delivering information or teaching facts. Instead, the goal is to rapidly flash each card to stimulate the brain, awakening the right hemisphere and encouraging whole-brain balance and development. The process supports intuitive learning and strengthens core cognitive abilities in a fun and engaging way.

Strengthening the Parent-Child Bond

The right brain is often called the "relaxed brain," and when flashcards are used together with a parent, it becomes more than just an educational activity. It becomes a bonding experience. Flashcard sessions nurture a deep sense of connection between parent and child, while also fostering emotional development and a rich, imaginative mind.

How to use Addition Flashcards

  • Create a positive learning environment that minimises distractions for your child.

    • Choose a quiet space free from distractions (no toys, screens or noise).
    • Establish a routine - before or after meals works well.
    • Keep sessions short, positive and consistent.
  • Show the formula side first, say the sum aloud, then reveal the answer

    • Begin from the back of the deck and move each card to the front.
    • Read the sum aloud while showing the formula side to your child.
    • Immediately show and say the answer to build connection and recognition.
  • Use a Step-by-Step Approach

Use each set of cards in four different ways to help deepen understanding:

    • Standard Order: Read aloud from start to finish (e.g. 1+1=2, 1+2=3, etc.)
    • Reverse Order: Read aloud cards in the reverse order (e.g. 9+1=10, 8+1=9, etc.)
    • Random Order: Randomise cards and say them aloud (e.g. 4+1=5, 7+1=8, etc.)
    • Random Order Quiz: Go through the cards in random order asking your child what the answer would be (e.g. 1+1= ?)
  • Celebrate Progress

    • Track achievements using the included goals table (note: printed in Japanese).
    • Praise effort, not just accuracy - confidence is key!
    • Pair with our workbook “Do Addition with Confidence!” for extra practice (available separately).
