How to use flashcards
- Before starting, create a positive learning environment that minimises distractions for your child.
- Set a time, such as before or after meals, to form a positive routine.
- Praise your child for their efforts.
- Complimenting your child’s efforts will increase their motivation and lead to a positive connection to learning.
- Starting with the card at the back, bring the card to the front and read the formula out loud (make sure the formula side is facing your child).
- Show and say the answer to the formula at the same time.
- For each bundle of cards do the following before moving on to the next set:
- Standard Order: Read aloud from start to finish (e.g. 1+1=2, 1+2=3, etc.)
- Reverse Order: Read aloud cards in the reverse order (e.g. 9+1=10, 8+1=9, etc.)
- Random Order: Randomise cards and say them aloud (e.g. 4+1=5, 7+1=8, etc.)
- Random Order Quiz: Go through the cards in random order asking your child what the answer would be (e.g. 1+1= ?)
